I have always been interested by the objects and fragments of objects people carry with them. I find it fascinating how how objects represent stories and carry meaning for us as humans. They are physical representations of memories, of places, moments in time, emotions and people. We keep and collect the tiniest fragments that remind us of places people and events. Often our personal collections can be recognised by many other people as markers of significant moments.
I am intrigued by collections, I love multiple representations of the same object, but am also interested in why people collect things, how they display them and what the collections mean for them.
My work on this project starts here, not focussing on what people collect but why we collect, not just to recall a time past, but perhaps to fill an emotional void or as a display of wealth/power. I am also looking at what we collect without realising, secrets, promises, wishes.
